Video description:

Come meet the Fockers of Wanderlust! One of the central purposes of Wanderlust is to create community around shared values. Meet the founders of Wanderlust, Jeff Krasno, Schuyler Grant and Sean Hoess, to discuss how to grow this community and define its values. Hear about the inspiration behind Wanderlust from Yoga to Yoda and share your ideas on how to evolve the event.

Wanderlust was created by three friends with a long and deep relationship: the 20+ year husband and wife duo of Jeff Krasno and Schuyler Grant, and their mutual friend (and Jeff’s business partner of a decade), Sean Hoess. We all met back in college during the dark ages of the late 80s. Long before Wanderlust existed, we loved to throw a good party and that hasn’t changed much.

But Wanderlust is more than a party. While it’s a great time, from the beginning we wanted to infuse it with meaning. We saw an opportunity to create an event that is fun but also based on a series of underlying ideals. We hoped to create a unique event where attendees were actually participants, an event where people left feeling better than when they came, an event that could be – at the very least – a good time and – at the most — personally transformative.

Finding a clear and concise purpose is a process both for a business and an individual. It’s very hard to distill & it can change. For Wanderlust, our core purpose is to create community around shared values. It has been incredibly gratifying to see such a large community growing around the pillars of mindful living – yoga, the arts, personal spirituality, environmentalism, organics and conscious consumerism – and to know that Wanderlust is becoming a central gathering point for this community.

The cauldron of talent at Wanderlust never ceases to amaze us and while we continue to seek out diverse and gifted artists, teachers, speakers and leaders — it often feels like the festival is being equally shaped by the talent of its participants. The scholars, buskers, acroyogis, hoopers, and artists that have organically integrated into the event have created the kind of exchange of ideas and energy that could never be replicated by any traditional festival or concert experience.

Wanderlust continues to evolve to include a broader range of experiences, including hiking, biking, running and other outdoor activities, a more diverse array of lectures, expanded food and wine events, movement and burlesque workshops, and even a community garden project. Wherever possible, these new activities will involve interaction and interactivity, so our attendees can learn and create as part of the event.

Wanderlust 2012 will be bigger and better than ever. There’s a lot to do, and many more locations at which to do it. We hope you can come take advantage of all of it, but don’t plan too hard. Always let yourself wander, because life’s most beautiful moments come in the spaces.

Please visit www.wanderlustfestival.com to learn more about the lineup for 2012!

—————————————–<———————->————————————–

[Editor's note: This is a guest post by Mariska Breland, founder and instructor of Fuse Pilates, where she reminds us of some essential principles of muscle anatomy.]

A fundamental truth of anatomy is that an overly tight muscle (or connective tissue) will inhibit its opposing muscle’s strength.

What was once the result of MS-related weakness for me has become a structural issue from walking not-quite-right for years, to walking flat-out-wrong for a few years beyond. Structural issues are formed from habits. These habits can range from anything, for instance, from talking on the phone too much (creating that kink in the neck) to poor posture. Today, unless I’m standing, my ankle doesn’t come up to a 90 degree angle towards my leg and doing a calf stretch for 5 to 10 minutes twice a day at this point won’t cut it. I found that as much as I tried to strengthen the muscles to flex my foot, it wasn’t working because the tightness in the back of my leg wouldn’t allow it.

This can also happen in women (and some adventuresome gents…Prince comes to mind), that live in their high heels (another form of habit). Wearing high-heeled shoes will cause shortening of the calf muscles and Achilles tendons. In addition, heels shift the pelvis into an undesirable position, though simultaneously making your legs look awesome. Those trendy heels I used to love aren’t so good for balanced leg muscles which yoga and Pilates are ideal for maintaining.

Think about it like this: If your bicep is contracting, it shortens, so your tricep has to lengthen. If both contracted at the same time, your arm couldn’t bend.

Why do muscles get tight?

The simplest reason muscles become tight is that they aren’t stretched or taken through their range of motion sufficiently. The cause may also be neurological as a reaction to things like stress, or it could be a biomechanical problem where the body will tighten around a joint that it recognizes as unstable to protect from further injury.

Other causes of tightness include overuse, which can produce micro tears in the muscles. Those tears result in the muscles tightening to protect themselves. It is also possible to overstretch. When the body feels you are over-stretching, it activates the stretch reflex where the muscle contracts to stop you from injuring it during overly ambitious stretch exercises.

Of course, it could always be a combination of more than one thing.

How to fix a muscle that’s weak?

When you properly stretch a tight muscle (and the surrounding connective tissue), its antagonist muscle (the one that does the opposite job), theoretically can spontaneously increase in strength. In addition to regular Pilates and yoga, there are devices you can use to harness the stretch, such as the stretch brace that I now wear for hours and hours and hours on end, all with the goal of stretching out the tight leg muscles that are making my foot flexion difficult.

The ultimate goal: No pain and walking with a better gait, even when fashion wins over dorsiflexion and I break out the high heels.

A Tip: The next time you feel weak in one body part, look at the one that does the opposite motion and ask yourself, are you weak or tight? Or maybe both?

Stay hard core,

Mariska

—————————————–<———————->————————————–

Next, a group of traveling yoginis, clearly inspired by Ragani’s amazing balancing act, attempt a world record for most yoginis striking a pose on an automatic walkway at the same time…I think they win…

It’s a bit of a costly habit (well worth it though), but one of the first things I do when I read a book is check whether the author provides additional reading recommendations. I’m currently reading The Science of Yoga and was happy to find a list of science and yoga history related books for further reading. As the author states, “The list makes no claim of being comprehensive but simply offers entree to a growing literature that draws on demonstrable fact and reasonable inference to illuminate yoga.”

Some of these look well beyond my attention span in the science of yoga–glad Mr. Broad read them all and summed them up so nicely–but I definitely plan to add a few of these to my shelves.

While Yogi Victor (Johnny Depp) is quite the crude yoga teacher, he clearly has Hank’s best interests at heart… Who knows, Hank might even learn how to “breath through his feet” once he gets a tank-top. Talk about some great lines…

Hank walks into class:

Hank: Uh, hello, I was wondering if yoga could help my back because it hurts like all…

Yogi Victor: Let me tell you a story. Once I was like you–skeptical, near-sighted, paunchy–then I met a special friend. This glorious friend took me to places I thought I’d never…

Hank: Eh, excuse me, is this one of those stories where this special friend of yours turns out to be yoga?

Yogi Victor: What time do you evacuate your bowels?

Hank: What?

Yogi Victor: There’s only one right answer! Between 4 and 6 in the morning.

Hank: Well this was a great way to spend a lunch hour…

Yogi Victor: Lunch is one of the worst things you can do to yourself!

At Hank’s disability hearing (where Yogi Victor is apparently his key witness):

Board member: Mr. Hill, this guy is not helping your case.

Hank: Exactly, let me ask you, what healthy person would voluntarily spend five minutes with this joker? If I wasn’t in horrible pain wouldn’t I have kicked this guys ass?

Board: Hmmmm…, yeah…, we find for Hank Hill. Congratulations.

Yogi Victor: Why are you rewarding this man for abandoning the yoga way!?! Look at him. He’s clinched from his back muscles down to his inner eye…

Any other T.V. shows out there with great yoga scenes?

This is an 18 minute Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation follow-along practice. It’s a great way to wake up in the morning, or to end your day. While there are modifications for beginners, poses are not described in great detail so if you are brand new to yoga, you may fare better with a more tutorial-like video. This video is practice oriented, with 5 repetitions of Surya Namaskar A and 5 of Surya Namaskar B. While these sequences are taken from the Ashtanga tradition, Forrest Yoga modifications have been given for a few of the asanas, including lengthening the back of your neck at all times in order to reduce neck and upper back pain which I find sometimes accumulates from lots of sun salutes.

Devoted much of the evening to devouring William J. Broad’s soon-to-be-released book, The Science of Yoga. Not many candle-burning, page-turning yoga books out there, but this is definitely one of them. Tough book to put down.

There’s something uniquely special about a science-focused yoga book that doesn’t induce immediate bouts of involuntary savasana. Needless to say, I’m entertained and enjoying the book.

Perhaps less exciting than some of the more hyped-up claims in the book, in the chronology section Broad introduces his readers to an Indian scientific text most yogis have probably never heard of: A Treatise on the Yoga Philosophy by N.C. Paul.

1851: N.C. Paul authors A Treatise on the Yoga Philosophy, considered the first scientific study of yoga. It seeks to explain how yogis maintain what the Indian doctor calls states of ‘human hibernation’ and looks to yoga breathing for clues to metabolic slowdowns (xxvi).

As you’ll see when reading The Science of Yoga, the treatise plays quite an inspirational role in Broad’s search for early scraps of scientific research on yoga. In his quest for early scientific yoga literature, Broad states:

The limitations of the current literature sent me casting a wide net, and I immediately made a big catch. It was a very old book–A Treatise on the Yoga Philosophy–written by a young Indian doctor and published in 1851 in Benares (now known as Varanasi), the ancient city on the Ganges that marks the spiritual heart of Hinduism. It came to my attention because a few Western scholars had referred to it in passing.

I got lucky and found that Google Books had recently scanned Harvard’s copy into its electronic archive, so I was able to download the whole thing in a flash. Its language was archaic. But the author had addressed the science of yoga with great skill, illuminating an important aspect of respiratory physiology that many authorities still get wrong today.

Well, of course I couldn’t help but go and find the book for myself and share it here on Daily Cup of Yoga. Click here or on the image below to download and read the treatise for yourself. The only question I have now is why Broad didn’t name his book The Science of THE Yoga…

I think you’ll enjoy the excerpt below. Besides this excerpt, the remainder of the article does an excellent job describing what it’s like to have a spiritual practice in a Communist country, which really sucks for some people (just ask Falun Gong members…at least the ones that are still alive…or not being tortured in a tiny dungeon…), but apparently yoga has not been blacklisted yet. As a lover of Chinese language and traditional Chinese culture, I have no doubt that the Chinese will put their own twist on the practice of yoga. All I can say is bring on the kung fu yoga classes!

When China’s first yoga studio opened nine years ago, its founders were a couple of women from California. Robyn Wexler had been teaching asana in the gym of a luxury Beijing hotel while looking for a space more conducive to holistic practice. Her partner, Mimi Kuo-Deemer, took photos for a living but was eager to devote more time to yoga instruction. Together, they decided to create what they had sought in vain: “a clean room with a simple wooden floor.”

“We got the idea on holiday in San Francisco,” Kuo-Deemer recalls. “I mean, how hard could it be to create that in Beijing?” They found it in a Qing Dynasty residence. Secluded from busy traffic in a quadrangle, Yoga Yard was a haven of tranquility. To Wexler, it epitomized “consistency, stability, and continuation in a city undergoing so much transformation and change, building up and tearing down.”

Initially, classes were in English. Though Kuo-Deemer and Wexler speak Mandarin, most students were expatriates. That didn’t last long. Across Beijing, Shanghai, and other metropolises, more and more gyms were offering yoga, hiring instructors who’d learned from DVDs and hyping it as the hottest trend in fitness. Practicing was the acme of modernity: a way of channeling energy to succeed. “It’s a symbol of the outside world,” Kuo-Deemer explains. “Like thin women on the beach.”

In less than a decade, yoga studios have sprouted all over China. They’re dotted along urban sidewalks, and classes can even be found in the hinterlands. They’ve spread so fast that no one’s keeping count. Estimates suggest that 10 million Chinese now practice regularly, compared to about 16 million Americans. Long before it displaces the U.S. economy, let alone its military, China will be the world’s new yoga superpower.

‘All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.’
~Blaise Pascal

Think about some of the problems of our daily lives, and how many of them would be eased if we could learn to sit alone, in a quiet empty room, with contentment.

If you’re content to sit alone quietly, you don’t need to eat junk food, to shop on impulse, to buy the latest gadget, to be on social media to see what everyone else is talking about or doing, to compare yourself to others, to make more money to keep up with the Joneses, to achieve glory or power, to conquer other lands or wage war, to be rude or violent to others, to be selfish or greedy, to be constantly busy or productive.

You are content, and need nothing else. It solves a lot of problems.

Can you sit alone in an empty room? Can you enjoy the joy of quiet?

Most of us have trouble sitting alone, quietly, doing nothing. We have the need to do something, to check our inboxes and social media, to be productive. Sitting still can be difficult if you haven’t cultivated the habit.

Learning to sit, even for a few minutes, is instructive. We learn to listen to our thoughts, to be aware of our urges to do something else, to plan and set goals. We learn to watch ourselves, but to just sit still and not act on those urges. We learn to be content with stillness.

We learn to savor the quiet. It’s something most of us don’t have, quiet, and it takes some getting used to. When we’re driving our cars or out exercising or eating or working or even practicing yoga, we have music playing or we talk with people or we have the television on. Quiet can be amazing, though, because it helps us calm down, contemplate, slow down to savor the emptiness.

Being alone is another pleasure we too often neglect. When we are alone, we go on the Internet or TV to see what else is going on, what others are doing or saying, instead of just being alone. This isolation is a necessary thing, that allows us to find ourselves, to learn to be content with little instead of always wanting more.

Can you practice being alone, being still, being quiet? Just a little at first, then perhaps a bit more. Listen, watch, learn about yourself. Find contentment. Need nothing more.

‘It has often occurred to me that a seeker after truth has to be silent.’
~Mahatma Gandhi

[Editor's note: This is a guest post by Sarah Oxley, who shares some insight on how to create a sanctuary for your home yoga practice.]

I’ve been doing yoga classes for a year now, and soon after I first started I also began a daily yoga practice at home. This wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be since I didn’t have the space to do some of the asanas I really wanted to try out. Most of the time I was worrying about knocking something over or being too close to items in the room. I tried clearing rooms and moving furniture to make more space, which did the trick space-wise, but I still couldn’t find the same focus and calm I often experienced in class.

After some research into ways to find inner calm I discovered the concept of the five elements. This ancient Chinese philosophy consists of surrounding yourself with the entirety of the five elements of water, fire, earth, metal, and wood. It was these elements that got me thinking about other spaces and areas in my home where I might be able to enjoy my home practice. Keeping the five elements in mind, I decided to try practicing yoga in the garden.

Practicing outdoors does present some challenges, especially in a colder climate where I live, so the next best thing came to mind: maybe I’ll practice in the garden shed. I cleared the shed out, gave it a good cleaning, placed an old sheet on the floor with my yoga mat on top, and included a portable electric heater to keep me warm. Although the shed served quite well as a quiet and spacious area to practice yoga, I still wanted to incorporate the five elements into my surroundings.

From my research I discovered that the five elements have two cycles: 1) the cycle of creating; and 2) the cycle of overcoming. They interact differently with each other depending on which cycle you follow. As yoga is a creative activity, I decided to focus on the creating cycle in which wood feeds fire, fire creates earth, earth bears metal, metal carries water, and water nourishes wood. The wood of the garden shed is my sanctuary, the heater and some scented candles represent fire. I often have the candles surrounding me in a circle. Some plants have been placed on the small window sill of the shed to symbolise earth, and I’ve bought a small water feature. I find the sound of the running water highly relaxing. Metal was a difficult element to include. I finally settled on following my water theme and focusing on sound. A wooden wind chime with metal tubes represents the element of metal in my humble sanctuary.

Although I realise this method of using the five elements is very loosely based on the Chinese philosophy of Wu Xing and is solely my own personal interpretation of it, I find it helps me not only in my yoga but in my daily life. I am more at ease and less likely to panic when faced with a difficult situation, and when a stressful event does pop up I think back to my time in my garden shed and visualise the flames of the candles, the sound and look of the metal chime and water feature, the smell and feel of the wood, and the company of my humble bonsai trees.

Join Krishna Das (acknowledged as the Chant Master of American Yoga by the New York Times) as he shares how he entered into the practice of chanting and what it means to him today, as well as his relationship with Maharaj-ji.

Layering traditional Hindu kirtan with instantly accessible melodies and modern instrumentation, Krishna Das has been called yoga’s “rock star.” With a remarkably soulful voice that touches the deepest chord in even the most casual listener, Krishna Das — known to friends, family, and fans as simply KD — has taken the call-and-response chanting out of yoga centers and into concert halls, becoming a worldwide icon and the best-selling chant artist of all time, with over 300,000 records sold.

KD spent the late ’60′s traveling across the country as a student of Ram Dass, and in August 1970, he finally made the journey to India, which led him to Ram Dass’ own beloved guru, Neem Karoli Baba, known to most as Maharaj-ji.

Given the name Krishna Das, KD began to chant as part of following the path of Bhakti yoga — the yoga of devotion.

After two and a half years with Maharaj-ji, returned to USA – alas, six months after his return, word came that Maharaj-ji had died.

He took solace in music, finding peace and strength in both his Bhakti yoga practice as well as in such heroes as Ray Charles, Van Morrison, Steely Dan, and Bruce Springsteen (whom he laughingly calls “the Bodhisattva of New Jersey”). KD also co-founded Triloka Records, a California-based label specializing in world music, releasing such artists as Jai Uttal, sarod virtuoso Ali Akbar Khan, and legendary jazz musician/composer Jackie McLean.

In 1994, KD started leading chant at Jivamukti Yoga Center, NYC, with an ever-growing audience of yoga students which has led to chant with people all around the world.

Since 1996 KD has recorded 14 albums including his latest ones ‘Heart as Wide as the World” and ‘Chants of a Lifetime’ (book + CD).

“The chanting just hits you and you want to be a part of it,” KD promises. “That’s the point of this whole thing. That’s what cuts through all the ‘stuff’. You get lit up. You don’t have to know what it means.”
