“These forms are not a means of obtaining the right state of mind. To take this posture itself is the purpose of our practice. When you have this posture, you have the right state of mind, so there is no need to try to attain some special state. When you try to attain something, your mind starts to wander about somewhere else. When you do not try to attain anything, you have your own body and mind right here.” ~Shunry Suzuki in Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind
Yoga pose has lots of health benefits that we can take advantage. It calms our mind and body which is beneficial to those individuals who are disturbed. When you are disturbed, both your mind and body experiences agitation. Your thinking triggers reaction on your body. So, a pleasant or not so pleasant mood is just a result of the content of your thoughts.
When you are in a bad mood, any yoga position such as the so-called indian sit can provide positive effects.
Many people think that yoga is asana and have lost sight of the depth that yoga
offers mood, approach, lifestyle, and health. Combining breath, concentration, and meditation, you find yourself in the perfect state of peace and calm.
D.T. Suzuki was not a Yogi. I doubt that listening to the opinions of a Zen Buddhist would help a Yogi along with the higher values of Yoga.
Dan – If a little Zen wisdom is not your thing, no worries! I’m far from Buddhist, but I sometimes find truth and insight from its teachings that help me with my yoga practice. Namaste!
